Six top tips to effectively recruit for a new role

If your business is recruiting for a new role,

it’s highly likely that the time you do have ‘spare’ is valuable and in short supply. You may already be wearing many hats in your business and now you’ve reached the point where, in order to continue growing, you need to recruit new skills and experience.

At ProspHR Solutions, we’ve been helping companies like yours for over two decades, recruiting for skills at all levels. We know how much time and effort it takes to find the right candidate for the role and for your company, to slot in like a missing jigsaw piece. In this article, we have focused on six top tips to help you recruit effectively for a new role.

Tip #1 – Clearly define the ideal candidate and the job role.

You need to know exactly who you are looking for and what you have to offer them. Be clear, accurate, and focused on the essential skills, qualifications, and personality traits your ideal candidate should have. This will help you to narrow down your search, and assess potential candidates more efficiently, ultimately saving you time finding the right person, the first time.

Going hand-in-hand with the ideal candidate profile is an attractive job description. Recruitment is a two-way street. Candidates are also evaluating who they want to apply to and work for. As well as the specifics of the role, make reference to personal development and opportunities within the company.  Describe your company culture and values. Help them to picture working with you and what that would be like.

Tip #2 – Map out the recruitment process from beginning to end.

Once you know who you are looking for and have matched that with a compelling job description, you want to ensure that every application receives a great experience with you, whatever the outcome. They could be an employee of yours one day! Mapping out the process in advance, especially if you are working to a tight deadline, will help everyone involved to work to the same time frame. Application tracking software can be extremely useful here as you’ll be able to see where individual applications are in the process. It can also save you time when recruiting roles in the future as you’ll have a record of previous applicants who may have the relevant skills.

Tip #3 – Before looking externally, remember to look internally.

This may sound like an obvious point but the skills you need for a new role may already exist within your company. If a new role has come as the result of growth, and you physically need more people in the team, then at some point external people will need to come into the business, but you should always look internally first. The benefit of developing an existing team member is that they already understand the company culture and how you operate.

In an ideal world, every employee will have a development plan to help them acquire new skills that the company needs – we’ll share more thoughts on that in a future blog.

Tip #4 – When it comes to advertising remember: Location, location, location.

Advertise in the places where your ideal candidate can be found. Don’t rush into posting anywhere, be selective. Posting in the wrong places not only wastes your time (and possibly money) in placing the advert but you could be inundated with poor-quality candidates which you have to spend time rejecting. Use your time and budget wisely from the outset.

Tip #5 – Use screening tools to help filter out candidates for interview.

If you are short on time, it’s best to utilize screening tools to filter applications on predefined criteria. Depending on how many applications you receive, these tools alone could save you hours! At the interview stage, you only want to speak with candidates who fulfill most of the job description criteria.

Tip #6 – Don’t sell your company short at the interview stage.

If you have spent time following our previous tips, don’t fail at the final hurdle. Utilise team members who have been trained in interviewing skills. Don’t just grab any manager at the last minute. It’s only fair to the candidate (and the member of your team spending time in interviews) that they are interviewed by someone who is prepared and has read through their application. Remember, this is your opportunity to sell your company so put forward the people who represent you best.
